HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) -- A man who police say fatally shot a woman at a Holland apartment matches the description of a man who killed himself a few hours later in Grand Rapids.

Robert Dewayne Echols, 29, allegedly shot 23-year-old Danika Flournoy in Building G at the Bay Pointe apartment complex at 791 E. 16th Street in Holland around 2:30 p.m. She died due to gunshots to the head. Police say the two knew each other, but are unsure of a motive.

Holland Heights Elementary School at 856 E. 12th Street was locked down as police set up a perimeter. Superintendent Brian Davis told 24 Hour News 8 every student was safe and accounted, and students were released a bit later than normal.

Holland Police at the Danica Flournoy murder scene

Holland police alerted Grand Rapids officers with a name, description and possible address for Echols in Grand Rapids. A vehicle matching the description of Echols' vehicle was found parked in front of his home in the 1000 block of Prospect Avenue SE. GRPD officers arrived and surrounded the house.

Other officers arrived in the area of 33rd Street and Eastern Avenue after hearing Echols knew somebody there. They spotted a man matching Echols' description running through a cemetery near Pastiche Drive SE around 4:30 p.m. Officers caught up with the man behind the nearby Millbrook Apartment complex. They approached him and that is when the man pulled out a handgun and shot himself. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday and his identity will be confirmed after matching fingerprints because he wasn't carrying any identification.

Echols has a long criminal history, including drug and assault charges. He was released on parole in August 2007.

The Holland Police Department continues to investigate this case and requests anyone who may have information to call investigators at (616) 355-1100 or Silent Observer at (616) 392-4443.

Thanks and Congratulations!

By Joe Walker - Chief Instructor

This Wednesday (October 29th) will mark the end of our first 8-weeks of our Women's Self-Defense class.  We started out with only 4 women in our class (including Angel), have had as few as 2 women and as of last night we now have 7 women in our class.  This new boost in our membership is giving me hope that we will continue to grow from here on out!

I would like to say congratulations to BETH BOCZEK and LORI FOLKERT who have completed the first 8-weeks of basic training and will be moving into new territory next week when they begin their intermediate training in ground fighting, defense and escape!

Also, I would like to send out a special congratulations to BETH BOCZEK who, just last night, took a full shot of pepper spray to the face as part of her pepper spray training.  Good job, Beth!  You're a real "trooper!" Laughing

And thanks to both of you for giving RADE TACTICS a chance to show you what we have to offer the women in the area.  Hopefully you'll never have to use what we practice, but if you do I hope you take with you the skills and confidence necessary to put the odds in your favor.

As always, train hard and stay safe!

Arkansas anchorwoman dies in hospital after beating

By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press Writer

From www.FOXNews.com

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. —  An Arkansas television anchorwoman died Saturday, several days after she didn't answer her wake-up call and was found beaten in her home, hospital officials said.

Anne Pressly, 26, died at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center.

Anne Pressly, 26, died at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Margaret Preston said.

In a statement released by the hospital, Pressly's parents, Guy and Patti Cannady, asked for privacy as they grieved.

"It was our hope, as was yours, that Anne would overcome the injuries inflicted upon her in the brutal attack at her home," the statement read. "We were with her in her last moments, and although our hearts are broken, we are at the same time comforted by our faith knowing that Anne is now with our heavenly father."

Pressly was beaten around the head, face and neck. She had been unable to communicate with her family or police while being kept sedated in the intensive care unit.

The anchor's death came only a day after a doctor said he was encouraged that her vital signs were stable while she remained in critical condition. Dr. Clifton R. Johnson told reporters Friday that swelling in Pressly's brain had gone down since being hospitalized and that doctors had slowly been reducing her sedative dosages.

She was discovered Monday morning a half-hour before she was to appear on ABC affiliate KATV's "Daybreak" program. Her mother went to her home after she didn't answer her regular wake-up call.

Police have yet to identify a suspect, though detectives have combed the area around Pressly's home in the Heights neighborhood _ a mix of bungalows and mansions near the Little Rock Country Club. News reports have said detectives found evidence that Pressly's credit card was used Monday at a gas station a few miles from her home.

Sgt. Cassandra Davis, a police spokeswoman, did not return a call for comment Saturday night.

Pressly was a native of Greenville, S.C., and moved with her family to Little Rock while she was in high school. She was a graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

She had a small role in the new Oliver Stone movie "W.," which was filmed in Shreveport, La. She appears briefly as a conservative commentator who speaks favorably of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" event on an aircraft carrier shortly after the start of the Iraq war.

Pressly's television station posted a short note Saturday on its Web site announcing her death.

"The staff of Channel 7 cannot express our grief at the loss of Anne, our dear friend and co-worker," the statement read. "We thank everyone for their concerns and prayers for Anne and her family over the past week. Please continue to keep her family in your prayers."

Why the typical women's self-defense programs fail

Women's Self-Defense on Keeping Up With The Kardashians

The Kardashian Sisters training in self-defense on the show "Keeping up with the Kardashians"

By Joe Walker - Chief Instructor

When my wife, Angel, and I first came up with the idea of RADE TACTICS (in particular, women's self-defense), the first thing I told her was, "This isn't going to be some cheesey 2-hour seminar crap!"  There is alot to be said about those words and the reality and reputation of women's self-defense in today's world.  Far too many times I've seen advertisement for programs that offer only a mere course or two or three or whatever and amount to only a few HOURS of training.  These programs claim or infer that a woman, or anyone for that matter, can be taught to defend themselves 'properly' with what amounts to a minimum time of study and training in what, for example, has taken me and many other people years to achieve, God willing.

A good example of this would be an episode of the show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" (click on the link to see the video clip) in which a group of sisters attend a single training session of women's self-defense.  Two instructors give essentially one-on-one instruction for what appears to be the typical hour or two hour women's self-defense seminar.  Most of the tactics (but not all) appear to be decent general self-defense tactics (I personally didn't like their version of the rear bear hug escape though).  When the girls return home, their step-father, 60-plus-year-old former olympic gold-medalist decathlete Bruce Jenner, asks to see what they've learned and bear hugs the girls and playfully slams them to the cushioned-furniture, etc., all the while the girls are feeling ill-prepared, discouraged and, well...ripped off and their time wasted!

Being from a martial arts training background that spans three decades, I don't discern much when it comes to self-defense preparation, whether it be traditional martial arts training or women's self-defense.  A boxer trains for months before a fight.  A collegiate wrestler trains for months before a meet.  Football and baseball players train for an entire season before their first game of the year.  Training for success, in any endeavor, takes time and lots of it!  This is at the very core of RADE TACTICS Martial Arts & Women's Self-Defense and what separates us from the other cheesy women's self-defense programs that are out there.  Months, if not years, makes all the difference in preparing oneself for a life-or-death situation.  Mere hours just don't cut it!

General Choi Hong Hi - Founder of Korean Tae Kwon Do

General Choi Hong Hi --- Founder of Korean Tae Kwon Do.  General Choi didn't just study and train for a few hours or even a few weeks.  He did so for decades!

Angel and I have spent countless time and effort in designing, selecting, and tweeking tactics and techniques that work for a wide range of people of all shapes, sizes, abilities, etc.  However, what works for me may not work for Angel or someone else.  And this is something Angel and I ran into when developing our women's program.

For example, I am 6'3" and my wife is 5'2".  If someone puts me into a side headlock it's pretty easy for me to throw my inside arm up and over the bad guy's shoulder and reef back on the infra-orbital pressure point (below the nose) to peel their head backward, hook the rear of their knee with my opposite arm and slam them to the ground, escaping the hold with little effort and by way of leverage or mechanical advantage.  This is very easy for me to do because I have extremely LONG arms.  My wife on the other hand, all 5'2" of her, cannot always effectively execute the same tactic due to her much shorter arms, especially if my 6'3" self is role-playing the bad guy.  So we've had to tailor the tactic and change it up a bit to suit her.  Since she can't reach my nose, but can reach my chin and mouth, I've trained her to "fish-hook" or hook the corner of my mouth with her fingers and rip backward (a very painful technique).

A good self-defense instructor will work with the individual student to find a solution if a tactic doesn't seem to work for them, given the student is doing the technique properly.  It may take a bit to work out the kinks, but with time, effort and a little analysis, a good instructor can and will find a solution.

When it comes to self-defense, training yourself to properly react can take weeks, months or even years, just as with any physical activity or sport.  Training for just a few hours or days is, in my opinion, training to fail!  And if you have an instructor who only shows you one way to do a technique or gives you only one option, don't waste your time.  Any instructor worth their weight in certification, wherever it may come from, will try to work with you and tailor the program around you, not tailor you around the program.

As always, train hard and stay safe!

Six homicides, two West Michigan communities ask: Why?

by The Grand Rapids Press

Thursday October 09, 2008, 5:11 AM

In the span of a week, six homicides left two small communities reeling. In tiny Wright, residents who rarely questioned their safety are jumpy about the unsolved slayings of four people. Meanwhile, two men were charged with killing a Howard City couple as a town mourns.

In Wright, a rural area known for apple orchards and farming -- where some homeowners still leave their houses and cars unlocked at night -- some residents say the mystery surrounding the Sept. 29 killings of Sharmaine Zimmer; her sons, Jeremy and Tyler; and Katherine Brown has them on edge. Others are less concerned and assume the killings were some type of targeted execution.

About 34 miles away, the abduction and killing of Norma and Robert Bean on Monday have shaken Howard City, where the Beans, both 66, owned a trucking company, R. Bean & Son Transportation, and were active in charitable causes and their church. Everyone in town seems to have a connection to the couple, their company, their children or grandchildren. Police have charged two men in the killings of the Howard City couple.

FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) -- Ferndale police say an adult education student tossed liquid on a teacher because he believed she was a witch who needed to be purified.

Police say 20-year-old Darin Najor of Ferndale threatened the teacher last month at Taft Education Center a day after confronting her about Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," which focuses on the Salem Witch Trials.

Detective Ken Denmark tells The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak that Najor says he was trying to purify the teacher with holy water.

Denmark says Najor also had a lighter and wanted to, in his words, "burn the witch."

Najor is charged with assault and battery and faces an Oct. 23 hearing. He is free on bond.

Court records didn't list a lawyer for Najor, and there was no telephone listing under his name.

RI schools required to teach about dating violence

From YAHOO! NEWS

By ERIC TUCKER, Associated Press Writer Mon Oct 6, 12:50 AM ET

Ann Burke talks about the new educational programs on teen dating violence while seated next to photos of her daughter Lindsay in her home in North Kingstown, R.I., Sept. 22, 2008. Lindsay Burke was murdered by her boyfriend in 2005 after an abusive relationship. A new law, named in her honor, mandates education of students and faculty in Rhode Island public schools about the signs of an abusive relationship.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - Ann Burke saw signs of trouble with her daughter's boyfriend.

He'd incessantly call her at night, keep her from her family, and, ultimately, physically abuse her during a tumultuous relationship that ended with her death three years ago.

Burke's 23-year-old daughter, Lindsay, may not have understood the dynamics of an abusive relationship, but her death is helping to ensure that other young people do.

A new law in Rhode Island called the Lindsay Ann Burke Act requires all public middle and high schools to teach students about dating violence in their health classes.

The initiative was spearheaded by Burke and her husband, Chris, who say schools should be obligated to teach teens the warning signs of abusive relationships and broach the subject head-on so victims feel empowered to get help and leave violent partners.

"If this could happen to her, this could happen to anyone," said Ann Burke, a health teacher who runs a memorial fund to raise money for dating violence workshops for parents and educators.

One other state, Texas, mandates unspecified awareness education on dating violence for students and parents, while several other states encourage it. But the Rhode Island measure goes further by requiring the topic be incorporated annually into the curriculum for students in seventh through 12th grade.

Burke says such education would have allowed her daughter to recognize the danger in her relationship earlier. Though her daughter left her boyfriend several times, she didn't change her phone number or have a plan for safely cutting off contact for good.

She also believed she could be friends with her boyfriend if the romance ended.

"I said, `No, he said that to you before, Lindsay. You can't just be friends,'" Burke recalled.

Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch, who shepherded the proposal through the legislature last year, said domestic violence is a disturbingly common crime, yet education about it is scarce and haphazard.

"You teach sex ed, you teach `don't do drugs,' you teach `don't drink,' you should also be teaching `don't be a victim of domestic violence,'" said Lynch, whose office receives about 5,000 cases a year.

School districts are expected to start implementing the law this school year. By December, officials hope to have established a policy for responding to incidents of dating violence.

The law is gaining traction around the country, with members of the National Association of Attorneys General unanimously adopting a resolution encouraging the education in their states. Nebraska's top prosecutor said he intends to submit legislation modeled after Rhode Island's law, and apparel maker Liz Claiborne Inc. has helped promote it around the country.

The education focuses as much on nurturing good relationships as avoiding abusive ones.

In a recent sophomore health class at South Kingstown High School, teacher Karen Murphy reviewed communication skills for friendships and romantic relationships, including waiting until you're calm before confronting someone with a problem and openly expressing your feelings.

"You've just found out that somebody spread a rumor about you and you approach them at their locker," Murphy told the class. "Are you going to want to start talking to her when you're extremely angry after you've just found out about it?"

"No," the class replied in unison.

Alex Butler, a 15-year-old sophomore, said he didn't think dating violence was a problem at his school but that the education has helped him identify stages of abusive relationships.

"It's nice 'cause then you can warn other people even if you don't know them," he said.

Even if the lessons seem obvious, teachers hope students will recognize that some behaviors they may tolerate in their relationships — obsessive text messaging, for instance, or physical control — are unacceptable and possible precursors to violence.

Ann Burke said Lindsay fell hard for Gerardo Martinez after meeting him at a wedding, and though he seemed respectful and nice, problems emerged after Martinez began exerting control over her daughter.

Ann Burke became so distraught that she couldn't sleep and she sought the advice of counselors. Fearing the worst, she even told Lindsay she couldn't bear to live without her.

One day in September 2005, after Lindsay had moved in with her brother to get away from Martinez, Burke became concerned when Lindsay didn't answer her phone.

Police found Lindsay in the bathtub of Martinez's home, her throat slashed. Martinez was convicted last year of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Burke believes her daughter would have wanted her to teach others about dating violence.

"You may have killed her physical body, but I'll be damned: her spirit is still living on in her family and friends," she said. "We're going to do what we need to do."

The fight at the bar involved several people, including some woman that may have been involved in a relationship with one of the victims, according to police.

Police say one of the victims injured by a bottle instigated the fight. Once released from the hospital, he will be taken into custody.

Lawmaker: Tase Me, Bro!

Here's a political shocker.

State Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, wants so badly to legalize Tasers for ordinary citizens in Michigan, he's willing to be shot by one in front of fellow House members.

Jones arranged to be zapped last week at a committee meeting to prove the electric stun guns are safe. The legislation in the House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee would allow those with concealed weapons permits to carry a Taser gun, which temporarily disables an attacker with a high-volt electric shock. Only law enforcement officers can use Tasers in Michigan.

Alas, the meeting was canceled. But Jones, a cosponsor of the legislation, pledged to be hit with a Taser when the committee takes up the bills in lame duck session.

Jones said he's never been Tasered before and doesn't fear the shock.

"It's a good cause and worth a little pain or sting," said Jones, a former Eaton County sheriff. "I feel very, very strongly that the citizens of Michigan should have a less than lethal option to defend themselves if they're being attacked."

NEW! Optional Training Hand Protectors Now Available!

By Joe Walker, Chief Instructor

Kwon TKD Hand Protector  Kwon TKD Hand Protector (Knife Hand) Kwon TKD Hand Protector 2

Angel just purchased a pair of these "Kwon-Tae Kwon Do Hand Protectors" for herself the other day from Kwon, Inc. and I have to say they are EXCELLENT for training!  Too bad for her, the gloves were too big for her small hands but just perfect for MINE!  Haha!  She will be purchasing a pair for herself on Monday so she won't be missing out.

These gloves are excellent for protection against the common scrapes and abrasions that can (and will) happen to your knuckles and hands when doing striking drills on the padded targets.  Not only can you strike with them, but they are small or thin enough to still be able to practice joint locking and grabbing escapes while still protecting your hands!  These could easily double as (heavy) bag gloves as well.  Angel had the opportunity to try out my pair on the "Instructor Body Guard" (with me in it!) earlier today.  When she was done pounding away on me she had the biggest smile on her face.  I asked her if she was ok and all she could say (with a smile) was "THAT was cool!" Laughing

If you are interested in purchasing a pair for training, let Angel know before or after class any Monday or Wednesday night.  We won't be selling them at retail and will be sure to give quite a generous discount to our RADE TACTICS members especially!  As always...

The description of the suspect in both incidents is similar, and police believe they are related. The victims say he is a white man, about 6'0" to 6'3" tall, having a thin build, a bald head, and a scratch on the left side of his face extending from his eye to the bottom of his cheek.

If you know anything about these crimes you are asked to call the Albion Department of Public Safety at (517) 629-3933 or Silent Observer at (517) 629-2700.

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) -- A 46-year-old Grant-area man has been charged with videotaping a co-worker using a breast pump at a Steelcase facility in Gaines Township.

Gregory Mannino agreed at a district court hearing Wednesday to have his case sent straight to Kent County Circuit Court. The felony charge of capturing the image of an unclothed person can be punished by up to five years in prison.

Court records show investigators believe the incident happened in June.

Steelcase spokeswoman Laura Muyskens told 24 Hour News 8 Mannino was fired after the incident.

"It's behavior that is not condoned by the company," Muyskens said, adding that the company believes this was an isolated incident.

She declined to comment further, citing the ongoing legal situation.

The victim's husband told 24 Hour News 8 the woman found out about the videotape after a supervisor discovered it.

The victim, who is not being named by 24 Hour News 8 because of the nature of the case, answers emergency calls at the Steelcase Corporate Development Center. Her husband said she can't be far from the phones, so the company offered her the use of a room near where she works. He said that is where the videotaping happened.

Mannino did not respond to a reporter's request for comment at the conclusion of Wednesday's hearing. His attorney declined to comment.

RADE TACTICS: Parking Lot & General Safety Tips; Reducing the Risk of Carjacking

By Joe Walker, Chief Instructor

Let's face it.  Crime is a "normal" part of our society.  It's everywhere.  We don't have to like it, but the fact remains that it's still there.  Whether it's a drive-by shooting on the south-east side, a B&E (breaking & entering) on the north-side, a bunch of larceny from automobiles on the west-side, or a murder-suicide at the end of a well-to-do cul-de-sac on the Kent-Ottawa County line, we just can't escape it.

So if we can't escape this demon of society, what CAN we do to protect outselves and put the odds back in our favor?  Should you carry a handgun or a stun-gun or pepper spray for protection?  What do the laws say regarding such devices?  Should you take a self-defense class or join a Judo club at the local YWCA?  There are alot of questions and a lot of serious decisions to be made when you decide to get real about your personal well-being as well as the well-being of those you love that are under your care.

The following is a list of good safety tips for different situations that are quite common and time-tested.  Why not take the time to read and consider these tips as they might just save your life someday!

Parking Lot Safety

  • Always lock the car and roll up the windows all the way. If you have any valuables or packages, lock them in the trunk.
  • If you're staying late, park the car near an exit or the attendant, not in the area that will be empty and remote when you leave.
  • As you approach the car, have your keys ready and check the seats before getting in.
  • You might also ask the security guard or a coworker to escort you to your car.
  • By taking a common sense attitude towards ones security, owners and users can both greatly increase the safety of the parking lot. It may not be heaven, but at least it will be crime free.

How to Avoid Being Assaulted

  • Avoid walking or running alone at night, instead go walking or jogging with a friend.
  • Don't use headphones while walking, driving, or jogging.
  • Always walk in well-lighted areas.
  • Avoid the use of short cuts.
  • After dark, keep away from large bushes or doorways where someone could be lurking.
  • Always stay near the curb.
  • If someone in a vehicle stops and asks for directions, answer from a distance. Do not approach the vehicle.
  • If you suspect that you are being followed, go immediately to an area with lights and people. If needed, turn around and walk in the opposite direction, your follower will also have to reverse directions.
  • Never display or "flash" your cash, expecially when leaving an ATM.

Carjacking: Reduce the Risk

  • As you walk to your car, LOOK around.
  • Before you get into your car, LOOK on the inside.
  • When traveling, make sure that your car has plenty of gas and is in good working order.
  • Avoid traveling alone, especially at night.
  • Lock your car doors and roll up windows whenever you are in your car.
  • Decide on a well-lit traveling route. Let someone know your plans and estimated arrival time.
  • Don't open your car door or window to strangers if you feel threatened.
  • Park in safe well-lit areas.
  • If a carjacker demands your car or keys - give them up - your car is insured and can be replaced - you can't. Remember a survivor is a winner!!!

WAYLAND, Mich. (WOOD) -- One of the two female teenagers accused in connection with beating a classmate that was caught on video has been sentenced.

The attack happened at Wayland Union High School on the final day of school last year. The 14-year-old victim said she was attacked because she is gay. However, the suspects said that wasn't a factor.

One of the 15-year-old suspects pleaded guilty last month in family court to aggravated assault. A judge ordered her on Monday to spend six weeks in juvenile detention. He also put her on indefinite probation.

The other suspect on Monday pleaded no contest to the same charge. She will be sentenced in November.
